Winter Water-Bag Covers — Get the Right Cover & Enough Double-Tube Bags

This page is 100% about water-bag style winter covers for in-ground pools. We size the cover correctly, calculate how many 10-ft double-tube water bags you’ll need, and install everything so the cover stays put through storms and freeze/thaw cycles.

Measure Your Pool — length × width

Measure the inside waterline length and width of your rectangle (or longest span if freeform). Note steps, ladders, and raised walls.

Accurate dimensions

Choose Cover Size — add 2 ft each way

Order your water-bag cover at least 2 ft larger than the pool size. Example: a 20×40 pool uses a 22×42 cover minimum.

+2 ft rule

Go One Size Bigger — safer than too small

A slightly larger cover is easier to secure and far less likely to slip into the pool during storms. We fold excess under before placing bags so it looks neat, like a custom fit.

Pro tip: size up

Double-Tube Bags — the reliable choice

We always use 10-ft double-tube bags. If one tube gets a small leak, the other tube still holds—unlike single tubes where one puncture means a lost bag.

Redundancy = security

Perimeter Layout — overlap & corners

Bags run around the entire cover edge with a small overlap at each end. At corners we angle/offset bags and fold cover under for a clean look.

Even edge weight

Filling & Placement — right amount of water

Fill to ~½–⅔ full. This leaves expansion room for freezing and makes spring removal easier. We position valves inward for easy topping-off.

Freeze-safe fill

Storm & Freeze Checks — simple maintenance

After heavy wind or thaw, walk the perimeter: re-center any shifted bags, top-off a low tube, and pump off standing water from solid covers.

Winter watch

Optional Leaf Net — faster spring cleanup

A leaf net over the main cover catches leaves. Pull it off mid-winter to remove debris without disturbing bags.

Less spring mess

Bag Care — extend lifespan

Keep bags off sharp coping. In spring, drain, rinse, dry, and store out of sun. Replace any with seam damage or brittle vinyl.

Longer-lasting bags

Photos & Notes — documented install

We provide time-stamped photos and a quick checklist (cover size used, number of bags, and maintenance tips) after your install.

Above-Ground Winter Covers — Winch & Cable Systems That Stay Put

This section covers above-ground and semi-inground pools only. These covers do not use water bags. They secure with a winch & cable — think of it like a belt: a heavy-duty cable threads through the cover’s grommets and tightens one direction on a locking winch.

Measure & Pick the Right Cover

Order by your pool size (round diameter or oval length × width). Choose a solid winter cover with reinforced grommets and a matching winch & cable kit.

Sized by pool

How Winch & Cable Works

Run the heavy-duty cable through the grommets around the perimeter (like lacing a fishing line through eyelets). Attach to the one-way winch and tighten — it locks at that tension so it can’t back off.

One-way lock

Top Rail Matters

The condition and profile of your top rail affects how well the cover lip grips the pool. Damaged, low, or slick rails reduce holding power and may allow slippage in high winds.

Secure rail edge

Decks Around the Pool

Decks surrounding above-ground pools hinder proper routing of the cable and cover lip. If any deck abuts the rail, there’s no guarantee the cover will stay on all winter.

Deck = risk

Air Pillow / Ice Equalizer — What It’s For

The air pillow’s main job is to reduce formation of a single solid sheet of ice — not to hold up the cover. Pillows often deflate or shift mid-winter, so don’t rely on them to maintain the cover.

Not a support

Install Sequence — Clean & Center

Remove ladders; center the cover; thread cable through grommets; attach winch; tighten evenly. Tuck excess skirt under the rail where possible for a neater look.

Even tension

Winter Maintenance — Pump Standing Water

After rain or thaw, pump off water from solid covers and remove heavy leaf loads. Less weight = less chance of stretch or slip during wind events.

Keep weight low

Wind Strategy — Cable Checks

Before and after storms, check winch tension and re-center the cover if needed. A quick 2-minute tighten can prevent mid-winter failures.

Storm ready

Semi-Inground Notes

Where the pool is sunk into grade, ensure deck gaps allow the cover skirt to drop and the cable to run freely. Tight spaces can chafe or pop the cover lip.

Mind clearances

Photos & Notes — Documented

We provide a quick report with photos (top rail condition, winch/cable route, tension check) and upkeep reminders for the rest of winter.

Our Guarantee
We Stand Behind Our Work

Winter Covers Installation Guarantee — Above-Ground, Semi-Inground & In-Ground

This guarantee applies to our winter cover installations across three systems: Above-ground & semi-inground winch-and-cable covers and in-ground water-bag covers. If anything about our installation isn’t right—cable routing/tension, cover centering, skirt seating on the rail, water-bag layout/overlap, or general alignment—contact the office and we’ll return to inspect and correct service-related issues.

  • Precision Fit Assurance: We ensure the cover is centered and seated, cable is routed through grommets and tightened one-way on the winch (AG/SG), and water-bags are evenly overlapped with proper fill (IG).
  • System-Specific Checks: Verify top-rail grip and winch lock (AG/SG). Verify +2 ft cover sizing or larger with neat fold-under and continuous bag runs (IG) to reduce slip-ins.
  • Clear Next Steps: If issues stem from factors outside our scope—decking built tight to the rail, damaged/low/slick top rails, loose pavers, structural settling, extreme wind events, or misuse—we’ll explain options, pricing, and timelines before any work proceeds.
  • Photo-Verified Installation: We document cable path, winch set, cover centering/edge seating, and (for IG) bag counts/fill with time-stamped photos and notes.

Where We Service on Long Island

We proudly service the majority of Nassau and Suffolk County with fast response times and full-service capability. To keep routes tight (and prices fair), we focus on areas where we can deliver reliable, on-time visits all season long.

  • Nassau County: We service most towns across Nassau, including the South Shore as far west as Valley Stream and Malverne. We do not service the far-north Gold Coast towns such as Great Neck and Locust Valley.
  • Suffolk County: Strong coverage in west/central Suffolk. We do not service the East End—no service east of Calverton or east of Bellport (including Hamptons & North Fork).
  • Fast scheduling where we operate most: Dense routes mean quicker ETAs and better pricing in our primary Nassau & Suffolk zones.
  • Not sure if you’re in range? Text your address, town, and nearest cross street. We’ll confirm coverage and the earliest route day in minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions

Winter Covers FAQ — Above-Ground Winch & Cable + In-Ground Water-Bag

Clear, practical answers for both systems. Above-ground covers use a winch & cable (no water bags). In-ground water-bag covers use 10-ft double-tube bags around the perimeter.

Above-Ground & Semi-Inground — Winch & Cable
Do above-ground winter covers need water bags?
No. Above-ground and semi-inground winter covers secure with a winch & cable threaded through the cover’s grommets, then tightened one way like a belt. Once set, the winch locks the cable at that tension.
How does the winch & cable system actually hold the cover?
A heavy-duty cable runs through each grommet (think fishing line through eyelets). The one-way winch tightens the loop so the cover’s skirt grips under/against the top rail. It doesn’t loosen on its own.
What affects whether the cover stays on all winter?
Top rail condition/profile (height, grip, damage) and surrounding decks. Decks that hug the rail block proper routing of the cable and cover lip; in those cases there’s no guarantee it will stay all winter.
Should I use an air pillow / ice equalizer?
Its main job is ice control (preventing a single sheet from spanning the pool). It’s not meant to “hold up” the cover. Pillows often deflate or shift mid-winter — don’t rely on them for support.
What maintenance keeps an above-ground cover secure?
After rain or thaw, pump off standing water and remove heavy leaves. Before/after storms, check winch tension and re-center the cover if needed. Low weight and even tension help it stay put.
Any installation tips for semi-inground pools?
Ensure gaps around decks let the cover skirt drop and the cable route cleanly. Tight clearances can chafe or pop the cover lip during wind events.
In-Ground — Water-Bag Covers
How do I size a water-bag winter cover?
Order the cover at least 2 ft larger than the inside pool size. Example: 20×40 pool ⇒ 22×42 cover minimum. When in doubt, go one size bigger; we fold the extra under so it looks neat and reduces slip-ins.
Why are double-tube bags better than single-tube?
10-ft double-tube bags add redundancy. If one tube gets a small leak, the other still holds. Single-tube bags fail completely with one puncture.
How many water bags do I need?
Use the perimeter rule of thumb: bags ≈ ceil( 2×(L+W) ÷ 9ft ) + 2 spare. Each 10-ft bag overlaps ~1 ft for strong seams. Example 20×40 → perimeter 120 ft → ~16 bags (14 + 2 spare).
How full should I fill the bags, and where do they go?
Fill ½–⅔ to allow freeze expansion. Place bags evenly around the entire edge with small overlaps; angle at corners. Keep valves inward for easy topping-off.
How do I prevent the cover from falling into the pool?
Choose a cover that’s at least +2 ft (or size up), fold excess under for grip, run bags continuously, and pump off standing water after storms. Too-small covers are the #1 cause of mid-winter drop-ins and expensive spring cleanups.
Any care tips to make bags last longer?
Keep off sharp coping, avoid over-filling, and in spring drain/rinse/dry before storage out of sunlight. Replace bags with seam damage or brittle vinyl.
