Filling up your backyard pool and jumping in isn’t enough to get it ready for the season. The owner of Empire Pools, has been in the swimming pool business for years, and he understands how important it is to open a pool correctly-both for the health of the swimmers and the health of the pool. “If you open a swimming pool properly, you can be sure that it is safe for use and its chemicals for the filtration system are in good condition,”. Unless it is too cold or your pool hasn’t been covered and there are too many leaves at the bottom to remove, never empty your swimming pool, Empire Pools says, even if you live in a cold climate. Make sure you have a cover for your pool because draining it can cause all kinds of problems. When the water table is high, an empty pool can lift out of the ground without being held down by water weight.
There are a lot of people who think they are going to empty and clean their pools in the winter, but they are either doing it at the end of a very wet season when there is a high groundwater table, or their pools are actually located in high water tables. The ground can literally pop out of a pool when it’s emptied in an area with a high water table. The pool will have to be completely replaced.
The filtration system should be put in place, all the baskets should be cleaned out, and any plugs put in during the time when the pool was closed should be removed. While you work on the pool, leave the cover on.
Over the winter, top off the water if the level has fallen. Before you turn on the filter, make sure it is clean. By removing the filter cartridge and using a hose to clean it, you can clean a cartridge filter. Your filter might need to be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled, depending on the type. Use a backwash setting on a sand filter to thoroughly clean the sand. Once the filter is clean, use the normal setting.
